Oesophageal Motility

Symptoms of Oesophageal Motility Disorders:

  • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
  • Chest pain not related to heart issues
  • Regurgitation of food and liquids
  • Sensation of food sticking in the throat
  • Heartburn

Treatment Options:

  • Lifestyle Changes: 

Avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, and sleeping with the head elevated.

  • Medication: 

Proton pump inhibitors (reduce stomach acid) and calcium channel blockers (relax oesophageal muscles).

       Therapeutic Procedures:

  • Oesophageal dilation: 

Widening the oesophagus using a balloon or dilators to relieve swallowing difficulties.

  • Botulinum toxin injections: 

To relax overly tight oesophageal muscles.

       Surgery: 

  • Laparoscopic(Hellers Procedure) or endoscopic myotomy (POEM procedure) (cutting the muscles of the oesophagus) are considered for some cases.
