Medical Weight Loss Solutions

Evidence-based, non-surgical approaches to weight management. Our medical team provides personalised treatment plans using the latest prescription medications, dietary guidance, and psychological support.

Prescription Medications

Modern weight loss medications work by targeting the biological mechanisms that control appetite and metabolism. All medications require a prescription and are non-funded in New Zealand. Our specialist bariatric team can prescribe these medications.

Wegovy (Semaglutide)

GLP-1

Wegovy (Semaglutide) is a prescription medication for chronic weight management. Wegovy and Ozempic are different brands for the same active ingredient.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonist — activates the natural fullness signal in your brain
  • Once-weekly subcutaneous injection delivered by a small needle
  • Average weight loss of 14.9% from initial weight over 68 weeks in clinical trials

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

GIP/GLP-1

Mounjaro is the newest weight loss medication available in New Zealand, targeting two gut hormones for enhanced effectiveness. Approved by Medsafe.

  • Dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist — targets two hormones instead of one
  • Once-weekly subcutaneous injection
  • Average weight loss of approximately 22% at maximum dose in clinical trials
  • The most effective weight loss medication currently available

Contrave (Naltrexone/Bupropion)

Contrave combines two established medications (naltrexone and bupropion) to help reduce hunger and control cravings. Particularly effective for emotional and stress-related eating.

  • Oral tablet — no injections required
  • Targets emotional eating, food cravings, and binge-eating behaviours
  • May also help patients who want to quit smoking at the same time
  • Both ingredients have been used safely for many years for other conditions

Your treatment plan

Based on your consultation, a personalised plan is created. This may include prescription medication, dietary changes, psychology support, or a combination. You will have regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed.

Ongoing support

Weight management is a long-term journey. Our team provides continued access to your doctor, dietitian, and support services. If at any stage surgical options become more appropriate, we can guide you through that transition seamlessly.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight can I expect to lose?

Results vary by individual and treatment. In clinical trials, Wegovy showed average weight loss of around 15% of initial body weight, while Mounjaro showed approximately 22% at maximum dose. Contrave typically achieves more modest results. Your doctor will discuss realistic expectations based on your individual circumstances.

Are the medications funded in New Zealand?

Currently, weight loss medications are not funded by Pharmac in New Zealand. This means the cost is paid by the patient. Your doctor can discuss the costs of each option during your consultation.

How long will I need to take medication?

Because obesity is a chronic condition, many patients benefit from longer-term treatment. Some may be able to reduce or stop medication after achieving significant lifestyle changes, while others find continued medication helps maintain their results. This is a collaborative decision made with your doctor over time.

What are the common side effects?

The most common side effects of GLP-1 medications (Wegovy, Mounjaro) are gastrointestinal — nausea, diarrhoea, and constipation — which typically improve as your body adjusts. Doses are gradually increased to minimise these effects. Your doctor will discuss the specific side effect profile of each medication with you.

Do I need a GP referral?

A GP referral is welcome but not required. You can contact us directly to book an initial consultation. We encourage ongoing communication with your GP as part of your care team.

Can medical and surgical approaches be combined?

Yes. Some patients begin with medical treatment and later proceed to surgery, while others use medication after surgery to manage weight regain. Our team can advise on the best combination for your situation.

Considering surgery?

For patients who haven't achieved lasting results with medical approaches alone, bariatric surgery offers a proven path to significant, long-term weight loss.
